2024 East Kent Coast Photographic Competition

Bird Wise East Kent and Thanet Coast Project have teamed up to host a third photography competition, to celebrate our coastal environment and wildlife! By entering your images, you will be helping to inform others of the importance of our coastal environment and highlight this area’s amazing biodiversity.  Open to everyone.

 

Here’s the outline details for the competition:

Two winners of each category will have the opportunity for their photograph to be shared in our local 2024 photography exhibitions, which will host the best photos of our stunning coast and its wildlife. We will also have one overall winner for adult and junior entrants. Here's the categories and terms and conditions -

Adult Categories:

Daring Dozen 

  • Any photo that features our magnificent overwintering birds (Curlew, Lapwing, Turnstone, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Grey Plover, Sanderling, Oystercatcher, Brent Goose, Purple Sandpiper, Redshank, or Dunlin)

Good Coastal conduct

  • An image of good environmental stewardship – that could include any person or groups helping the environment by following the Thanet Coastal Codes or leading by example, such as beach cleans.

Coastal Wildlife

  • A portrayal of any species living on the coast.

Coastal Landscape 

  • Showing a coastscape image taken from a stretch of coast from Whitstable to Pegwell and Sandwich Bay.

Human Impact on the Environment 

  • Showing any negative consequences of human activity on an area/ species.

Savvy Sea Dog 

  • Showing a dog owner and/or their savvy sea dog demonstrating good coastal conduct and following the Doggy Do’s guidance.

Younger Categories:

Young Photographer, ages 0-11 years

  • Featuring images based on any of the adult categories

Young Photographer, ages 12-18 year

  • Featuring images based on any of the adult categories

 

Terms and conditions

  • Images have to be taken in the coastal area between Whitstable and Pegwell Bay.
  • Submissions must be given with complete answers to all submissions questions.
  • One participant can only enter into 2 categories at most with 2 submissions.
  • Anyone that is found to be fabricating or causing any disturbance/ harm to any wildlife/ environmental damage for their images will not be considered.
  • Participants must follow any restrictions of the coastal area and wildlife (such as drone legislation and no-go areas) and follow the coastal codes.
  • By sending your images you are agreeing for these images to be used in the exhibition, publicity, and advertising without any compensation or refund of images.
  • Any image you submit must be your own original work.
  • Anyone above the ages of 18 can submit within the adult categories but the younger categories please specify the age of the participant.

 

Participants can only enter a maximum of 2 images, these can be for the same or different categories, so choose carefully, and enter before the deadline of midnight on Sunday 18 February 2024.  Finalists will be notified by 2 March 2024, and the awards ceremony will be on Friday 19 July 2024.

The 2024 exhibition of the winning entries aims to raise awareness of the features, coastscape and good stewardship of the North East Kent Marine Protected Area and is a collaboration between Bird Wise East Kent and Thanet Coast Project.

2024 Exhibition dates & venues
  • 10-12th July, 10am-4pm = Crab Museum, Margate
  • 1st- 12th August, 9am-5pm (except closed Tue 6 Aug) = Horsebridge Centre, Whitstable
  • 17th – 29th August, 10am-5pm = Margate Visitor Information Centre
