What's on 2019

These are the public events and activities run by the Thanet Coast Project.

The Thanet Coast Project run these public events with the help of volunteers - mainly Coastal Wardens/Guardians.  There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to help on the coast - see 'Coastal Wardens', Beach Cleans & 'Coastbusters'.  

Some activities are part of the new 'Guardians of the Deep' project with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help increase awareness raising and engagement - particularly with schools.  Advice on school/group excursions can be found under Learning on this website.

Wonderful Woolly Watery World!

Come along and discover life under the sea is like, if everything was wool!

Our knitted and crocheted art display of sea creatures will be an immersive display featuring creatures made by people in Kent and beyond, put together in an fun and informative way. You will learn about the Marine Conservation Zones around Thanet and Kent and what amazing creatures live there and how you can see them for yourself!

Summer Exhibition: Wed 24 July to Sun 8 Sept, 10am - 5pm

Great Eggcase & Scavenger Hunt, Labyrinthe and Beach Art Challenge - at Broadstairs Water Gala

  • Wed 31 July 2019     
  • 9:30am start (lasts 1.5hrs): Meet o/s Harbourmaster's office (opposite Tartar Frigate PH), before accessing the Viking Bay beach via the wooden slope. CT10 1EU

Join the scavenger hunt looking for clues of our marine life along the shore, and looking out for shark and ray egg cases, on this activity that includes sand/beach art at the end!   

Please note: You will need to wear suitable footwear and clothing for the beach, sand art and the weather conditions on the day. All equipment is provided by the Thanet Coast Project. These events are suitable for families and especially children aged 4-11, Children must be accompanied by an adult throughout. Activities last 1.5 hours.

Summer Seashore Safaris

Explore Thanet’s chalk rocky shore for its fascinating rockpool wildlife! 

Identification sheet & equipment is provided and there is help on hand to identify your finds.  Wear suitable footwear for rocks & rockpools (eg wetshoes, crocks or wellies!) and wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions on the day (water/windproof if wet/windy; or coverup, hat or suncream, if sunny). 

All events last for up to 2 hours and are suitable for ALL the family, but particularly 4-11s. Children must be always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Suggested donation of £1 or £2 per person (adults & children!)

Note: A ‘first come, first served’ booking schme takes place at the start of each event - as we have limited equipment, so please get there early!

Big Seaweed Search - Thanet Coast

Opportunity to join in with a 'citizen science' project designed by the Natural History Museum led by Laura Welton, Guardians of the Deep Project Officer. No prior knowledge needed as we will be looking for a selected set of seaweeds, that are used to indicate sea temperature rise, spread of non-native species and ocean acidification. By walking a stretch of coast we will record the abundance of a set number of seaweeds. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. Identification sheets provided. Event lasts 1.5 hours. Free - with thanks to Guardians of the Deep project.

Seaweed and their Secrets – Walk & Talk

A great opportunity to find out all that you ever want to know about seaweed! This walk & talk is led by seaweed expert Ian Tittley, formerly Natural History Museum, Kent Field Club & Kent Wildlife Trust.   

The Thanet Coast’s chalk reef provides the perfect substrate for different algae communities within the designated Marine Protected Area. Come along for this walk through rockpools and along the shore to discover seaweed, their uses and properties on this outdoor talk.  Please note advice on booking.    These walks are suitable for people of 14 and above, and last for 2 hours.

Great British Beach Clean 2019

Sat 21 Sept, 10am – Pegwell Bay, Cliffsend CT12 5HY 

(Meet: on the beach below former hoverport access road)

Sat 21 Sept,  2.30pm – Plum Pudding, Birchington 

(Meet: outside Minnis Bay Restaurant)

Join the largest annual beach clean & litter survey, as a part of the Marine Conservation Society's national campaign and monitoring of beach litter.  The events below last for 2 hours and are open to all to join in. Children have to be supervised by a responsible adult.

Litter sticks, hoops, and bags are provided. Please bring along garden gloves and wear appropriate clothing for weather on the day (windproof/rainproofs if raining) & tough footwear for walking on the beach. Please also bring along your own water bottle, or refreshment, to quench your thirst!

 Coastal Warden/Guardian - Introductory Training 2019

This is the introductory course for new volunteers that would like to help as Coastal Wardens/Guardians on the North East Kent coast, which includes the NE Kent MPA.

Volunteers adopt a local bay or stretch of coastline and help look after local marine and bird life in your patch. We will take you through the history of the North East Kent Marine Protected Area (NEKMPA) and the management scheme, your role as a coastal warden/guardian and how you can help. 

  • Friday 18 October 2019:  1pm (3.5hrs)  Margate

Booking only:  All new volunteers will need to complete an online registration form  (2019)   (if having trouble please down load & complete:  ‘Volunteer Registration Form’ first and send in to us).  We will send you an invite to book on the next training session nearer the time.

Coastal Wardens/Guardians / Volunteering

Local people can get actively involved with looking after their own chosen stretch of coastline by enrolling as a NEKMPA Coastal Warden with activities and training opportunities throughout the year.    In addition, you can volunteer to join the 'Coastbusters' (non-native species control teams - currently targeting Pacific Oysters) around NE Kent - just send us a email if you would like to get involved or with 'Making a Buzz for the Coast' - with task days

Coastal Community Beach Hut

Games, crafts and educational resources on Margate & Ramsgate Main Sands particularly suitable for community groups with young families: Find out more  

Beach Cleans for Community Groups

Community groups can organise their own beach cleans, or join in with ones that are currently organised by local groups.  Find out more or join our Great British Beach Clean event above! 

School/Group Excursions 

Schools, clubs or large group excursions can view the variety of marine and coastal wildlife around the Thanet coastline depending upon the tide being in or out; and see evidence of coastal erosion, run beach inspired activities, or just visit for general coastal leisure opportunities.  More information  (who to notify, bay facilities and online resources)

Mobility Access:  Many of our beaches have 'all terrain wheelchairs' available for booking for anyone with mobility impairment. For further information and for donations to help this superb charity, please visit the website: Beach Within Reach

If you can't book - and for people that can't access the internet - then please speak to the Thanet Visitor Information Centre in Margate Harbour: call them on 01843 5775770.  PLEASE NOTE: During 2018 many of the events will be 'first come, first served!' - or as stated - so please arrive a little earlier to sign in.
