2017 Events and Activities

What's on in 2017 

These are the public events and activities run by the Thanet Coast Project this year!

Some of these activities are part of the new 'Guardians of the Deep' project with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help increase awareness raising and engagement, particularly with schools but also events on the beach such as the spring Scavenger Hunts and summer Seashore Safaris.

The Thanet Coast Project can only run these events with the help of many volunteers - mainly Coastal Wardens/Guardians.  There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to help on the coast (See 'Coastal Wardens', Beach Cleans & 'Coastbusters' further below).

Thanet Coast Project


MCS Great British Beach Clean 15-18 Sept. 2017

This is one of the largest weekend calls of action on UK beaches.  

Well done to all the beach cleans undertaken by volunteers in our area. 

The GBBC is coordinated by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and allows people to help - by recording and cleaning beach litter that will be compiled into a national database to asess the state of our beaches over time, and add evidence for campaigns.

Fri. 15 Sept, 1pm (2hrs) - Seasalter (Guardians of the Deep)

Sat 16 Sept, 10am (2hrs) - Plumpudding, Minnis Bay Birchington (Thanet Coast Project)

Sat 16 Sept, 12pm (2.5hrs) - Walpole Bay (ABC/Walpole Swimmers)

Sat 16 Sept, 2pm (2.5hrs) - Pegwell Bay  (Thanet Coast Project)

Sun. 17 Sept, 9.30am (1.5hrs) - Deal (Dealwith IT)

Sun. 17 Sept, 10am (1.5hrs) - West Bay, Westgate  (Westgate Against Rubbish)

Sun. 17 Sept, 3pm (2hrs) - Epple Bay, Birchington (Coastal Warden/MCS)


Coastal Warden/Guardian - Introductory Training

This is the introductory course for new volunteers that would like to help as Coastal Wardens and Guardians on the NE Kent MPA coast. Volunteers adopt a local bay or stretch of coastline and help look after local marine and bird life in your patch. We will take you through the history of the North East Kent Marine Protected Area (NEKMPA) and the management scheme, your role as a coastal warden/guardian and how you can help. 

  • Wed, 11 October 10am to 3.30pm – Margate/Ramsgate, Kent
  • Bookings open 25 September (but you will need to complete a 'Volunteer Registration Form' to receive an invite!) 

NEW Volunteers need to complete a ‘Volunteer Registration Form’ (download from the website at):  http://www.nekmpa.org.uk/how-to-help/nekmpa-coastal-wardens/  {hyperlink; or ‘copy & paste’ link below into your browser}  and we will forward booking information for the next training session nearer the time. The next training is in October.




Please note: a) You may need the latest browser eg Google Chrome to access the booking scheme; as some browsers do not work with this booking system. If you can't get use of a laptop to access, you can always book at the Margate Visitor Information Centre in Margate harbour (or call them on 01843 5775770.  (Bookings close the day before - so if places available, please do turn up at start & we will sign you in!)

Mobility Access:  Many of our beaches have 'all terrain wheelchairs' available for booking for anyone with mobility impairment. For further information and for donations to help this superb charity, please visit the website: Beach Within Reach

Local people can get actively involved with looking after their own chosen stretch of coastline by enrolling as a NEKMPA Coastal Warden with activities and training opportunities throughout the year.

Coastal Community Beach Hut

Beach Cleans for Community Groups

Destination Thanet

'Discover Thanet Coast' under the ‘Destination Thanet’ project (2015-17) for coast and heritage ran events and projects with support from the Coastal Communities Fund.
