East Kent Coast Photographic Competition

Photography competition 2021-22

Bird Wise East Kent and Thanet Coast Project have teamed up to host our first photography competition, to celebrate our coastal environment and wildlife! By entering your images, you will be helping to inform others of the importance of our coastal environment and highlight this area’s amazing biodiversity. Open to everyone.

Two winners of each category will have the opportunity for their photograph to be shared in our local 2022 photography exhibition, which will host the best photos of our stunning coast and its wildlife. We will also have one overall winner for adult and junior entrants.  You could win:

Junior 0-11 winner:

  • Entrance to Wildwood for you and your family.
  • A pair of binoculars and a bird identification book to help you on your wildlife adventures.
  • A coastal nature session with Bird Wise East Kent and Thanet Coast Project – that will include; species identification, rock-pooling and local knowledge of our coastline. Max 6 people.

Junior 12-18 winner:

  • A Kingfisher walk around Ramsgate harbour with local birder and wildlife video maker Keith Ross. Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • A pair of binoculars and a bird identification book to help you on your wildlife adventures.
  • A coastal nature session with Bird Wise East Kent and Thanet Coast Project – that will include; species identification, rock-pooling and local knowledge of our coastline. Max 6 people.

Adult winner: 

  • Year membership to Monkton Nature Reserve for yourself and your family, giving you free entrance.
  • A pair of binoculars and a bird identification book to help you on your wildlife adventures.
  • A coastal nature session with Bird Wise East Kent and Thanet Coast Project – that will include; species identification, rock-pooling and local knowledge of our coastline. Max 6 people.

Participants can only enter a maximum of 2 images, these can be for the same or different categories, so choose carefully, and enter before the deadline of midnight on Monday 31st January 2022.

Adult Categories:

Daring Dozen 

  • Any photo that features our magnificent overwintering birds (Curlew, Lapwing, Turnstone, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Grey Plover, Sanderling, Oystercatcher, Brent Goose, Purple Sandpiper, Redshank, or Dunlin) 

Good Coastal conduct

  • An image of good environmental stewardship – that could include any person or groups helping the environment by following the Thanet Coastal Codes or leading by example, such as beach cleans.

Coastal Wildlife

  • A portrayal of any species living on the coast.

Coastal Landscape 

  • Showing a coastscape image taken from a stretch of coast from Whitstable to Pegwell and Sandwich Bay. 

Human Impact on the Environment 

  • Showing any negative consequences of human activity on an area/ species. 

 

Younger Categories:

Young Photographer, ages 0-11 years

  • Featuring images based on any of the adult categories 

Young Photographer, ages 12-18 year

  • Featuring images based on any of the adult categories 

 

Terms and conditions 

  • Images have to be taken in the coastal area between Whitstable and Pegwell Bay
  • Images must be sent to birdwise@thanet.gov.uk and the file size no larger than 2 megabytes in JPEG format.
  •  When emailing the images, participants need to specify the category they are applying for, their name, a name for their image, date & location taken, and age if entering one of the Young Photographer categories.
  • If successful, the participant will be required to provide a short introduction to the image, including what significance the image illustrates and how they were able to take the image. 
  • One participant can only enter into 2 categories at most with 2 submissions. 
  • Anyone that is found to be fabricating or causing any disturbance/ harm to any wildlife/ environmental damage for their images will not be considered. 
  • Participants must follow any restrictions of the coastal area and wildlife (such as drone legislation and no-go areas) and follow the coastal codes
  • By sending your images you are agreeing for these images to be used in the exhibition, publicity, and advertising without any compensation or refund of images. 
  • Any image you submit must be your own original work. 
  • Anyone above the ages of 18 can submit within the adult categories but the younger categories please specify the age of the participant. 
  • If we suspect any of the conditions have not been followed then you forfeit all photos submitted
